MIGRAIN: October assessment- LR

Feedback given by Sir:

Grade: (E) 21 marks

WWW:

  • This starts well and you show some flashes of real insight with excellent use of terminology. However, the second half of the exam is a problem.
EBI:
  •  Genre theory is a weakness - revise this!
  • Lack of depth/detail to analysis in places for the top levels.
  • Q4 is confused and aslo lacks depth. I think a different structure could have helped you. Ultimately, your textual analysis needed to be much more detailed and specific.
Mark scheme: (points I've missed out)

Q1: Propp's character theory types: urban hero established through costume and props

Q2: both use the sky background to create meaning but in very different ways (looming clouds v rising sun).

Q3: Neale “repetition and difference” – allows producers to evolve genre but maintain audience; Abercrombie “television producers set out to exploit genre conventions... economic sense”
... “Genres permit the creation and maintenance of a loyal audience.”

Q4: Oppositional or counter-hegemonic readings: reinforcement of negative black stereotypes (‘Sex, drugs and R&B’); central image aggressive or challenging; informal language (‘Bada$$’) could suggest embracing ‘street’ culture or a lack of education; jewellery could reinforce ‘bling’ stereotype of modern urban music; ‘Who is music’s number one genius?’ could be open to very different interpretations depending on audience demographics.

Strongest question:

I think my strongest question was Q2 because I understood what the question was asking for but also because I had a good knowledge of the influences of the social and cultural contexts on media products by supporting it with references from the sources.

Weakest question:

My weakest question was Q3 as I received 2 out of 9 marks which is because I had missed out on the lesson when Genre was taught and couldn't quite catch up on it fully. Also, I didnt manage my time properly and couldn't finish my answer.

Re-write your weakest answer in full. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure your typed re-draft is a top-level answer.

Genre is important for both media producers and audiences. Producers will find Genre significant when creating different media texts because it helps them attract specific types of audience when using different key conventions which will make the product more successful. By making the product more successful, the use of genre provides economic reassurance for the producers and industries that there will be some sort of profit being made. Abercrombie: " media producers set out to exploit genre conventions....and it makes sound economic sense." Producers often repeat conventions of a particular genre (e.g in action movies audiences look forward to violence, guns and fight scenes) in order to appeal to a certain group of people and therefore create audience loyalty. This is supported b Neale's theory of 'repetition and difference' which helps audiences to anticipate and expect certain conventions throughout the film.

This proves that genre is important to audiences because it helps them identify what to expect for films, by creating audience loyalty, it is determined that the film will be a success for the producers. The fact that the producers will change certain conventions within in the film is to keep the audience intrigued as they are considering their interests and producing what they want to see so that the text will not become cliche.
