January assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). ...

WWW: You start well with a solid answer on ownership and control. From there, it is difficult to find much to credit... ultimately. The lesson here is that missing lessons and vital content has a major impact on progress and test results.

EBI: Clearly, you need to learn/revise certain topics: public service broadcasting, audience effects theory

Q3 specifically mentions cultivation theory but your answer didn't. Learn this!

Once you know the material, you will need much more depth and sophistication to reach the higher grades. I firmly believe you are capable but we need to start seeing some evidence.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

1. I missed out on the following strategies: Synergy, Conglomerate ownership, Diversification

Some benefits I missed out: reduce costs and increase profits, Diversification means companies can embrace new technology and find new revenue streams e.g music industry streaming

2. For statements: it is regulated by OFCOM so therefore maintaining standards and providing audiences somewhere to complain or raise objections to content

Against statements: Younger audiences don't watch live TV in the same way as older generations. Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime will dominate TV market eventually- public service broadcasting needs to update to find a lace in that digital market.

3. Some ideas that I could have mentioned: Uses and Gratification theory - audiences are active and seek out media they wish to engage with. This would suggest media is less likely to be damaging and audiences have a high degree of control over their media consumption.

!!!!NAME THE THEORIES!!!!

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

I think on a scale of 1-10,4 would be where I place myself because during the holidays I re-did all my notes and put them in my folder. The mistake I made was that I didn't go back over all my notes and condense the information into small cards. If I had done that I could have revised from that.

4) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I started to talk about Vertical Integration but didn't actually state the strategy I just described it. However, I did mention the benefit that it reduces costs and increases profits so they wouldn't have to pay a lot for distribution of their content.

I mentioned Horizontal Integration and the benefit that they would be promoting their content

5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

I mentioned the BBC however I didn't mention other broadcasters.

Here are some points that I missed out: Public service broadcasting prevents the UK media industries being quite so cut-throat –
broadcasters can take risks safe in knowledge channel can’t go out of business. For channel

-Commercial broadcasters cannot compete to provide content such as news and current
affairs if audiences can get it free from public service broadcasters (e.g. BBC website). This
places commercial broadcasters (e.g. Sky News) at a huge disadvantage.
-BBC and Channel 4 shouldn’t produce popular programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing as this is unfair on commercial broadcasters struggling to survive in the digital age. Instead PSB channels should focus on programming that isn’t profitable so therefore not produced by commercial rivals .

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

I think the media has a serious effect on audiences especially a younger audience. This is because they spend longer consuming the media than older generations. Bandura's social learning theory suggests people copy behaviour seen on screen. This would make sense because audiences spend so long using the media. Parents are becoming more concerned with their children using the media and therefor thinks it's necessary to regulate the content. By regulating the content, children will not be exposed to certain content such as violent imagery or inappropriate content that could affect them. The media is quite damaging in the sense that it forces the consumers to believe that everything they seen online is true. Consuming the media for long periods of time links to the cultivation theory which suggests that the media influences the consumers ideas and perception of everyday life. However, content is regulated by OFCOM assuring parents and viewers that content is suitable for younger audiences.
